The History of the Hilo Student Arts Association
Now celebrating over 40 years since our group was chartered.
Quietly responsible for hosting the annual juried student and senior art shows; The Hilo Student Arts Association is one of the oldest Registered Independent Student Organizations or RISO's at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. Each year student volunteers from an array of backgrounds and majors of study come together to organize a vast amount of art from UH System artists on Hawai'i island campuses. They select jurors, collaborating with well-known artists from Hawaii and the world. Then they matte, frame, hang, and advertise the art that the jurors select and open shows that have been enjoyed by our island communities for over four decades. It is a tremendous amount of volunteer work and can only be accomplished by those who love and value art within their community.
The group is always paired with academic advisors from UH Hilo. The first such advisor being Professor Wayne Miyamoto who began teaching at UH Hilo in 1981. Other advisors have included Professors Michael Marshall, Andrew Goebel, and the current advisor Jonathon Goebel.
Each year the board overseeing the events and activities hosted by the SAA changes as the students who attend the University change. Each group teaches the last how to organize and prepare live art events thus educating generations of future artists, gallery owners, etc. on the appropriate techniques used in the industry.
